JUNK FOODS: WHY IS IT LIKE BEST BY CHILDREN?






Here in our country one of  the famous small scale business is sari -  sari store wherein ,it  is commonly found everywhere. They sell variety of goods and one of them are junk foods .Mostly, children are the one who keep on buying it.  But are those goods preferable to be eaten and why children are devoted in eating junk foods if it is considered as a junk  based on its given name. 





















To answer this question we gather information by asking some pupils that we caught on act buying and eating junk foods.

After asking some of pupils about why they like eating junk foods, we come up with a generalization that  they like it because of some reasons like:
A. It is affordable
B. It is tasty
C. It is crunchy
D. It satisfies their taste
E. Other children buy it



REGARDING THIS MATTER , WE VISITED THE RHU (RURAL HEALTH UNIT ) TO CONFIDE SOME DETAILS AND INFORMATION TO UNDERSTAND FURTHER MORE THIS ISSUE

What is junk foods?

   According to Wikipedia , "JUNK FOODS" is a derisive slang term for food that is of little nutritional value and often high in fat, sugar,salt,and calories.  Junk foods typically contain high levels of calories from sugar or fat with little protein, vitamins, or minerals .
Foods commonly considered junk foods include salted snack foods, gums, candy, sweet desserts, fried fast food, and sugary carbonated beverages. The more highly processed items usually fall under the junk food category.
Despite being labeled as “junk” consuming such foods usually does not pose any immediate health concerns and is generally safe when integrated into a well balanced  diet.
Junk foods contributes to poor performance and obesity
Junk food contains large amounts of fat , and as fat accumulate in your body , you’ll gain weight and could become obese . The more weight you gain , the more you’ll  be at risk for serious chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis .You could even had heart attack .Because junk food doesn’t contain the protein or complex carbohydrates that your body needs to maintain consistent blood sugar levels, your blood sugar levels will drop suddenly soon after eating. You'll crave sugar and likely end up eating more junk food. Over time, this stress damages your bodies ability to use the insulin secreted by you pancreas . A healthy diet can help maintain you body’s insulin sensitivity . Even in a short term, eating junk foods can make you feel  really uncomfortable .it can lead to mood swings and constipation , and lower your energy levels so that you lack interest in the exercise you need to burn off those extra calories. Overtime , the high levels of sugar and simple carbohydrates in junk foods  can lead to  type 2 diabetes .
These occur because eating to much sugar puts your metabolism under stress, when you eat a lot of  refined white sugar and simple carbohydrates, you body has to come up insulin production to prevent a dangerous spike in blood sugar levels .  because junk foods doesn’t contain the protein or complex carbohydrates that your body need to maintain consistent blood sugar level , your blood sugar level will drop suddenly soon after eating . you’ll crave sugar and likely end up eating more junk food.

BENEFITS OF EATING NUTRITIOUS FOOD


  The benefits of good nutrition are multiple . Besides helping you maintain a healthy weight, good nutrition is essential for the body and all its systems to function of optimally for a lifetime. 

In fact, the benefits of good nutrition can be found in physical and mental health because a healthy diet provides energy, promotes good sleep, and gives the body what it needs to stay healthy. When you consider the benefits of good nutrition, it’s easier to eat healthy.
  WHAT IS NUTRITION?
Nutrition is a process by which living organisms assimilate food and used it for growth and replacement of tissues.   Nutritional supplements include minerals, herbs, and meal supplements and are added to diet to boost the immune system and support the overall health.


THREE MAIN CLASSIFICATION OF FOOD

  Are mainly composed of foods that contain carbohydrates. They give energy and the example are rice, corn, cereals, potato, cake, bread, noodles and other foods that primarily provide carbohydrates.
  The thing is, go foods are very essential for everyday consumption. These foods helps us to do work, run, jump, and play all day.  



Grow foods
 
We know that our muscles are important for our bodily functions, so we must always let grow foods be part of our diet. Examples are meat, fish, dairy product such as milk and cheese. All of these grow foods contains iron calcium, protein; A nutrients which are responsible for our muscle growth and strength or when you need to repair A wound or injury.
   Foods that help build strong bones also contain calcium, whereas other “GROW” foods provide us iron which is important to keep our blood healthy.

    



 

   






Glow foods
 
It contains A large amount of vitamins and minerals. It helps us to digest our food and be healthy. Glow foods make us look beautiful.
  It makes our skin smoke and attractive. It is often used for foods that have A positive effect on the elasticity and sheen of the hair and skin.
          


         
         
   

                                                                                                                                                                                                           We went to Ryan's gym in Zone – 4, Bulan , Sorsogon and interviewed one of the costumer about how he practice diet.
 
                                I am Mr. John Marwin Marquez , 24 years old , married. Actually, I started visiting the gym way back in 2003 but I stopped for 3 years because of my job. Now, I start again to reduce weight and become physically fit. According to him, he doesn't take breakfast. He only eat lunch and dinner meals.  He always eat Vegetables(rich in vitamins and minerals), root crops(low-carbohydrates), liver(rich in protein) and a cup of rice(carbohydrates) and those that are rich in protein but low in calories that  can help in his body building.                             
                                                                                                                                               
                 
Within one month, I lost 12 Kilos. (from 92-76) and because of that, it adds my confidence and flexibility. I jog everyday to maintain my fitness even I am not in the gym.
  

Through proper exercise and balance diet we can achieve a healthy and good-looking body.

                                                               


           Mr. Marquez , is a great example of a person who wants to take good care of his physical appearance. Also , we can be physically fit  and maintain good health by means of proper exercise and balance diet thus , eating nutritious food can help us a lot to achieve our desired body.

 FOOD PRESERVATION


WHAT IS FOOD PRESERVATION?

Food preservation is the process of treating and handling food in such a way to stop or greatly slow down spoilage to prevent  food from getting spoilt. This can be done in a number of ways, you can coat a food in a substance that will preserve it such as salt, sugar of vinegar. You can dry food or you can keep it  in an environment  that makes  bacteria that degrades food less able to survive such as a fridge or freezer.

METHODS OF FOOD PRESERVATION

This includes  :
a . canning
b. curing
c. salt curing
d. pickling
e. freezing
f. irradiating
g. dehydrating
h. sun-drying
i. freeze-drying

FOODS THAT CAN BE PRESERVED

            a. vegetables
b. fruits
c. meats
d. fishes


   In this documentary , we focused mainly on the process of preserving fishes since it is one of the main source of income here in our town . Last Tuesday , February 25 , 2014 we visited one of the site in Zone-6, Bulan , Sorsogon wherein fish preservation occurs. 


       
  PROCESS OF MAKING SMOKED FISH / (“TINAPA”)

Mr. Edwin Morata, 42 years old, owner of the smoked fish industry (“tinapahan”) , he stated the step by step procedure in smoked fish.


The following steps are:



1. Wash the fish; put into the water with salt and   soaked it  for 2 hours. 

2. After 2 hours, drain the fish and let it boil for about    3 - 5 minutes .

3. After boiling , put it in the tray and spray it with   food color (yellow).

4. Let it dry under the sun for 1 to 2 hours.
5. When it is dried already, prepare the drum with   lumber excess  (“kusot”) for smoking session .
NOTE: The “kusot” gives more color and scent to  the fish.
6. Let it smoke for about  45 minutes.
7. Repack the finish product.




           
                        

  







PROCESS OF MAKING DRIED FISH / (“TUYO”) 

1. Remove the gills, scales, and other internal parts of the fish.               

2. Wash it using a clean water.
3. Soak the fish in the water with salt for about 1 hour.
4. After that , drained the fish and let it dry in the sunlight .
5. Flip the fish to the other side when it is dry.

PROCESS OF MAKING FISH PASTE / (“BAGOONG”)

HOW TO MAKE “BAGOONG
       
                                                                                                            
1.Place “dilis” in the strainer and
 rinse under  running tap water.




2. Drain well.










            






3. In a container or basin , place “dilis” and 
add rock salt.
 4. Mix well (hint : the best way to mix it is with your hand, wear plastic gloves if 
you hate the clinging smell.) 

5. Transfer mixture into a tightly sealed plastic or glass container. Don’t fill the container to the brim . Leave some air space to allow it to properly ferment.
6. Keep in a cool and dry place , away from direct sunlight for  1- 2 months. You can even store it for a longer period of time.
7. Serve as is with a dash of lemon , dayap or calamansi ,or you can also cook it.
